That's Bruno on the right there, my bull terrier cross. Now if you know bull terriers, you'll know they can be pretty stubborn. So making sure they are well trained from a young age is essential.
When Bruno was a puppy, he was very difficult to train. Housebreaking seemed to take forever!! Before I got Bruno, I had always had cats. With a cat, you show it the kitty litter tray once, and from then on they use the tray. Not with dogs .... I think it took me 6 months to finally get Bruno to do his business outside. Thank goodness I had timber floors and not carpet!
And taking him for a walk was a nightmare. Hw was so excited he would strain at the end of his leash. He was always about 4 feet in front of me (I swear, I walked with my arm fully extended in front of me, and leaning over to keep up with him). He was also easily distracted. He'd make sudden lunges to the left or right to investigate an interesting smell (or a wayward cat). To people driving past on the road I must have looked a sight!
And I didn't have any better luck with basic commands such as "sit" and "stay". Oh - he'd manage it for a minute, but then something else much more exciting would catch his eye, and he'd be off. I have to say, in hindsight, getting a stubborn dog as a first dog wasn't really all that smart.
I always realised the problem was with me - not the dog! But try as I might I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Every book I bought, or person I talked to, suggested something different. But none of them worked. I ended up paying (big time) for some professional training for the dog (2 weeks - live in - you can imagine that bill ....).

If puppy doesn't get the message with this, pick him up by the scruff of his neck and shake his body while you tell him "no" in a mean voice. And again, playtime is over.
For the really stubborn puppy, put him on his back and hold him until he calms down and gets the message that you are top dog. If he is little, you can do this in your arms. For the larger puppy, do this on the floor.
