Dog Owners Guide
For New Puppies, New Dogs and Old Dogs
Are you thinking about getting a new puppy, or even an older rescue dog? If you do, then there are some things you need to consider.
Are You Ready for a New Puppy or Dog
The most important thing is - a dog is a living thing.
If you want a dog because you think it'll look great in that new BMW you just bought, think how much fun it will be when it tears up the leather upholstery. This isn't like buying a new pair of shoes. It's closer to having a child - a child that doesn't speak English and occasionally eats poop. If that thought sends you screaming from the room, consider another kind of pet like maybe a fish or a plant or a new pair of shoes.
Puppy Quiz
Here's a little "pup-quiz" that will help determine if you are ready to add one more member to the family. Just click on the button below:
If you passed the test, then you have a few more steps you need to take:
Which Dog ?
- decide on the breed of dog that is most suitable for your lifestyle (are you a couch potato or an exercise junkie).
- decide what breed of dog is best for your living environment (do you live on 30 acres, or in an apartment)
- An excellent resource is a breed selector quiz from PetNet. Click here to find out which breed is best for you.
- make sure you can afford it (collar, leash, grooming supplies, bedding, toys, vet's bills, registration)
- find a place to buy your dog
Basic Training & Beyond
And then, once you have your dog, you'll need to:
- prepare yourself for training your dog
- learn to understand dog behaviour
- housebreak your dog
- teach your dog some basic commands
- if that works, you might want to teach your dog some fancy tricks (don't believe the saying you can't teach an old dog new tricks!!)
Well, the good news is there's an excellent book available which can help you with all of this. The Dog Owner's Guide takes you through everything you need to know from selecting a breed all the way through to creating a superstar performer.
Dog Owner's Guide
That's Bruno on the right there, my bull terrier cross. Now if you know bull terriers, you'll know they can be pretty stubborn. So making sure they are well trained from a young age is essential.
When Bruno was a puppy, he was very difficult to train. Housebreaking seemed to take forever!! Before I got Bruno, I had always had cats. With a cat, you show it the kitty litter tray once, and from then on they use the tray. Not with dogs .... I think it took me 6 months to finally get Bruno to do his business outside. Thank goodness I had timber floors and not carpet!
And taking him for a walk was a nightmare. Hw was so excited he would strain at the end of his leash. He was always about 4 feet in front of me (I swear, I walked with my arm fully extended in front of me, and leaning over to keep up with him). He was also easily distracted. He'd make sudden lunges to the left or right to investigate an interesting smell (or a wayward cat). To people driving past on the road I must have looked a sight!
And I didn't have any better luck with basic commands such as "sit" and "stay". Oh - he'd manage it for a minute, but then something else much more exciting would catch his eye, and he'd be off. I have to say, in hindsight, getting a stubborn dog as a first dog wasn't really all that smart.
I always realised the problem was with me - not the dog! But try as I might I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Every book I bought, or person I talked to, suggested something different. But none of them worked. I ended up paying (big time) for some professional training for the dog (2 weeks - live in - you can imagine that bill ....).
That's why I am so excited about the Dog Owners Guide. I wish I'd known about the Dog Owners Guide when Bruno was a pup - it could have saved a lot of frustration (both for Bruno and for me). This book has tons of great tips - all the way from socialisation, to basic commands, to how to communciate with your pooch.
This is, without a doubt, the best book of it's kind that we here at BestDoggieTips have come across. We heartily recommend it to all of our friends. In fact, we were so impressed that we secured the rights to make it available to you through BestDoggieTips.com.
Excerpt from the Dog Owner's Guide
Here's an excerpt from the Dog Owners Guide on puppy biting:
Puppies bite everything when they are getting new teeth, which helps the teeth come in. But you do have to stop him from biting people. The best discipline is the kind that his Mom would use.
If puppy bites, grab his muzzle with your hand and say "no" in a mean voice (close to his face). Then leave. Playtime is over.
If puppy doesn't get the message with this, pick him up by the scruff of his neck and shake his body while you tell him "no" in a mean voice. And again, playtime is over.
For the really stubborn puppy, put him on his back and hold him until he calms down and gets the message that you are top dog. If he is little, you can do this in your arms. For the larger puppy, do this on the floor.
I was lucky with Bruno in that he was a very loving dog, but if I had got hold of this eBook earlier, I am sure life would have been much less confusing for Bruno!
